## Overview

Phase 2.3 implements pattern-based detection of instructions that rely solely on sensory characteristics (color, shape, size, visual location, orientation, or sound), addressing WCAG 1.3.3 requirements.

4. Return comprehensive results

### Sensory Characteristic Patterns

**1. Color-Only Instructions**

- **Examples:** "red button", "green link", "blue icon"
- **Severity:** Violation (critical)

### Severity Classification

**Violations (Critical):**
- `color_only` - Instructions relying solely on color
- `shape_only` - Instructions relying solely on shape
- `sound_only` - Instructions relying solely on sound
- `click_color` - Click instructions with only color reference
- `see_shape` - Visual instructions with only shape reference

**Warnings:**
- `size_only` - Instructions relying on size
- `location_visual` - Instructions using visual location
- `location_specific` - Action instructions with location

### Text Element Filtering

**Included Elements:**
- `p`, `span`, `div`, `label`, `button`, `a`, `li`, `td`, `th`, `h1`, `h2`, `h3`, `h4`, `h5`, `h6`

**Filtering Criteria:**
- Text length: 10-500 characters (reasonable instruction length)
- Visible elements only
- Trimmed whitespace

### WCAG 1.3.3 - Sensory Characteristics (Level A)
**Requirement:** Instructions provided for understanding and operating content do not rely solely on sensory characteristics of components such as shape, color, size, visual location, orientation, or sound.

**How We Test:**
- Scan all text elements for sensory-only instructions
- Match against 8 sensory characteristic patterns
- Flag critical violations (color, shape, sound)
- Warn about potential issues (size, location)

### Accuracy: ~80%

**Strengths:**
- High accuracy for common sensory patterns
- Good detection of color/shape/sound references
- Comprehensive pattern coverage

**Limitations:**
- Context-dependent (may flag legitimate references)
- Cannot understand semantic meaning
- May miss complex or unusual phrasings
- Requires manual review for context

**False Positives:**
- Descriptive text (not instructions): "The red button is for emergencies"
- Color as additional cue: "Click the Submit button (red)"
- Shape as description: "The logo is a round circle"

**False Negatives:**
- Unusual phrasings: "Activate the crimson control"
- Indirect references: "Use the colorful option"
- Visual-only instructions without keywords

## Performance Considerations

### Processing Time
- **Per Page:** ~1-3 seconds (text extraction + pattern matching)
- **100 Elements:** ~1-2 seconds
- **500 Elements:** ~2-5 seconds

### Recommendations
- Use appropriate timeout (10s default)
- Limit to reasonable text lengths (10-500 characters)
- Skip very long text blocks (likely not instructions)
